Buffalo Yacht Club was founded in 1860, and has maintained a close relationship with Buffalo Power Squadron ever since the Squadron was formed in 1945. My father died shortly before my high school graduation, and after my mother and I moved into the City and I finished college, it was only natural for me to transfer my membership from Hamburg Power Squadron to Buffalo. It was the beginning of a way of life.
In those days we taught our Squadron courses on Friday evenings at the Buffalo Naval Reserve Center, which is located on the same road as the BYC. Squadrons instructors were required to wear the full Class A uniform, and after we adjourned our classes, we were invited by the Commodore to join him at "his Club." No one passed up the invitation, and on Friday nights it looked like the Atlantic Fleet had landed in Buffalo! My wife and I had some of our first dates at BYC. |
Many lifelong friendships were made in those years. I eventually became commander of Buffalo Power Squadron and my wife and I were accepted as members of the Buffalo Yacht Club. Those were wonderful, happy years. We moved to Florida a quarter of a century ago, and when we couldn't find a club like BYC we decided to create one. North Palm Beach Yacht Club began in our living room. A few years later we were asked to join the Palm Beach Sailing Club, and later still I was elected Rear Commander of United States Power Squadrons -- and assigned to the Chair of the National Flag & Etiquette Committee. It's been a lifelong trip but whenever I'm asked where it began, I always say "Buffalo Yacht Club."
