What is "The Academy?"Over a decade ago I created something I called the "P.O.R.T.S. Program" -- Prospective Officers Round Table Seminars -- and tried to get some yacht clubs to sign on to the idea of hosting officers' training programs. Interest was, shall we say, "underwhelming."
A few friends and I continued to discuss the P.O.R.T.S. idea for a number of years, and eventually we came up with the "International Commodores Association." We envisioned a group of former yacht club commodores who would be selected based on individual merit. They would meet in local chapters, hold meetings and social events, and incidentally share their knowledge with new officers coming through the chairs. I got to work and created an ICA, flag, insignia; the whole works. Soon we had everything except members! It seems that people who have served as commodores of yacht clubs are pretty busy folks: the one thing they don't need is another organization. So it was back to the drawing board. The third time should have been the charm, and it was--but not quite. The "I.C.A." morphed into "The Academy of Yachting,'' which had one purpose: education. Academy programs are aimed at everyone who wants to know about the "ins and outs" of club life. Sessions are led by licensed professionals, and it is the only such program that is authorized to award continuing education credits to professionals. It was a good idea, but not yet a GREAT idea. To do that, we needed an international outreach. We would have to expand the Academy concept so that Clubs could become part of this new way of solving problems. And so Tringali's Certified Registry was born. |
